ROW HARDER!

Four Cubs sit on the floor and pretend to be on a boat rowing together.  Another cub stands at the front of the boat and yells “Harder men! Row harder!”.  One of the rowing Cubs says “Captain! Captain!”.    The captain says “Not now Johnson, I am busy!”.  Captain then returns to looking worried and saying “Row harder men, row harder!”.

Once again the Cub yells “Captain! Captain!”.  The Captain says “Johnson! I said BE QUIET!”.  The Cubs continue rowing for a few seconds.  And then the Cub tries one more time “Captain! Captain!”.  The captain yells “What Johnson, WHAT?”.  The Cub then says “Do you think I should untie the boat from the pier?”.

Game:

COMPASS POINTS:

With a piece of sidewalk chalk or blue painters tape, draw 8 lines, intersecting in “star” fashion, all radiating from the center, to indicate the points of the compass. One line should point due north.  One scout now takes up his position at the outer end of each line to represent one of the eight principal points of the compass. The leader now calls out any two points, such as SE and N.  The two scouts at those points must immediately change places.  Anyone moving out of place without his point being named, or moving to a wrong place, should lose a point.  When changing places, scouts must not cross the lines, but must go outside the circle of players.  When a scout loses three points, he is out.

Craft or Activity:

·         Make a gift or toy and give it to someone. Wolf Elective 9b-c

Make a picture frame out of craft sticks or fun foam.  Have each boy decorate his frame. Insert a photo of himself or a picture he drew.

·         Bake Cookies. Bear Achievement 9a

Use the recipe in the bear book.  Bake and have the boys take cookies to a neighbor.

Make snacks for Pack meeting. Bear Achievement 9b

Chex mix Muddy Buddys or Popcorn balls  are simple to make and can be make the week ahead in Den meeting and then served at pack night.

Snow Clothes Relay:

Materials: Two outfits of outside winter clothing (i.e. coats, mittens, boots, snow pants, scarf, hat, etc) and two paper bags.

Directions:  Place the clothing in two bags.  Divide the boys into 2 teams.  One team member must run across the room put the clother on in order of receiving them out of the bag.  Then run across the room and take it all off, for the next player to put on.  First team to have all players finish, wins the game.

Crafts and Activities:

Tin Punched Christmas Ornaments

Materials:

·         Lids from frozen juice cans

·         Copies of pattern

·         Tape

·         Large nails

·         Scrap lumber

·         Acrylic paints or markers

·         Fishing line or ribbon

Directions: Tape a pattern to a lid.  Lay lid on piece of scrap lumber to protect the work surface.  Using hammer and nail, punch a small hole through each dot for each design.  Add one more hole for hanging . Paper Bag Luminary

Materials:

·         Brown paper lunch bag for each scout

·         Simple paterns

·         Pencils

·         Punches

·         Votive candles

·         Sand

Directions: Take a brown paper lunch bag and trace a simple pattern in pencil on oneside.  Punch out your design with a hole punch.  Fill each luminary with about 2 inches of sand. Sink a votive candle or tea light in the center.  Place the luminaries along a walk, patio or deck.  Have a grown up light them.

Reindeer head ornament or neckerchief slide

 

Materials:

·         Craft Sticks

·         Googly eyes

·         Plastic ivy or mistletoe

·         Little red pom pom

·         Glue

·         Jute to hang or ring for slide

Directions: Take 3 craft stick.  Place 2 in a “V” with one overlapping at the bottom.  Glue together at the bottom. Glue a little red pom pom at the bottom on top of the stick that overlaps. Place the third stick across the top and ¼ of the way down from the top so that it crosses over the “V”.   It will stick out on both sides.  Glue this stick where it crosses over both sides of “V”.  Glue 2 googly eyes to the “V” just below where the third stick crosses over.  Glue a little piece of ivy in the middle of the third stick. Glue jute or ring behind the ivy.

Teacher: Today class, we are going to learn about the American Revolution.  More than 200 years ago our forefathers defeated the British army in the revolutionary war.

Student 1: They defeated the whole army?

Teacher: Yes!

Student 2: Our four fathers?

Teacher: Yes! Isn’t that exciting?

Student 3: Yeah! They must have been really strong if it only took four of them to defeat a whole army!

Game: Flag Race

Items needed:

8 - 9”x 2” strips of red paper

6 - 9”x 2” strips of white paper

6 - 18”x 2” strips of red paper

6 - 18”x 2” strips of white paper

2 - 14”x 9” rectangles of blue paper

100 white stars (50 need to fit on blue paper) Variation 26 stars - the original flag had 13 stars in a circle.

Divide into two teams. On signal, each team tries to assemble their paper flag before the other team.  Variation: do individual time trials.  The boy with the fastest time overall wins.

Cub Scout Blue & Gold Star Person neckerchief slide idea - Astronomy, Citizenship

We did this cute little guy in Roundtable last week.  To make him, print out the PDF of the picture below, and cut out each shape.  Trace onto the fun foam.  Cut out the foam pieces, turn them over, and glue them together with a glue gun so you don't see the pen marks.  Glue on 7mm size eyes, draw on the nose and mouth, add some glitter glue for a neckerchief slide, and add a flag if desired.  Attach a section of PVC pipe to the back.

 Cut out each shape and trace onto fun foam

 Use a glue gun to assemble the pieces together

 If you want wiggle eyes, the size I used was 7mm

Utah National Parks Council Pow Wow Book Supplement 2011-2012

I noticed this on the Akela's Council blogspot and thought it was a great resource.  Go check it out!  It is a 217 page document...  In August of 2011, Utah National Parks Council put out a supplemental CD to their Pow Wow book they had published the previous year.  There are 217 pages with an assortment of amazing cub scout resources including... Core Value Info, and pages with forms to be able to keep hard copies for each of the boys so you do not have to rely on the boys books.  There is some great information.  Hope you have fun checking it out.

I went to Akela's Council 7 years ago, and completely loved my experience.  It has made me have a love of Cub Scouting, and taught me how to have fun with Scouting.  I learned all typed of amazing things I could do with my Cub Scout boys.  I hope you will seriously look at the information below and consider going.  It will truly improve your pack, stake, and our district.  Highland West stake has offered to pay for up to 9 Cub Scout Leaders to attend this training.  It would be a shame to waste this generous gift.  I would be happy to call your stake presidency to ask about scholarships if you are interested.  Reply to this e-mail and let me know who to contact in your stake.  Will you please forward this e-mail through all your Cub Scout stake and ward leaders and packs, and to anyone you think that you might be able to encourage to attend Akela's Council?

This year, Utah National Parks Council will be putting on their 28th and 29th sessions of Akela's Council.  Akela's Council has been going strong since 1987, and is a 4 1/2 day Cub Scout Leader Training.  This year Akela's Council will be held twice:

• Frandsen Scout Ranch (located at Scofield Reservoir) on July 24-28, 2012, and
• Tifie Scout Camp at Mountain Dell (near Mount Pleasant) on September 11-15, 2012. 

Past participants have deemed Akela's Council to be the most motivating and enjoyable training they have ever completed. Registration is limited so register early for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. This training meets the needs of all Cub Scout Pack level leaders.  Akela's Council is advanced training, similar to Wood Badge, but focuses on all aspects of the Cub Scout program and how to make it fun and meaningful for boys and leaders.  Please try to attend, and encourage your Cub Scout Leaders to attend this training.  Remember... every Cub Scout deserves a well trained leader.  Attached is a paper application for the course with more information.
