Cub Scout Space Derby Ideas

We lost access to our site we stored all our files on.  We have asked Akela's Council to store our files for us.  You can find access to them HERE.

For our Cub Scout pack, we found out that it worked good to rotate between the different derbies, and not do only the Pinewood Derby every 3rd or 4th year.  There are so many different and fun derbies you can do... Raingutter Regatta, Space Derby, Cubannapolis, Pinewood Derby, and Paper Rockets to name a few.  If we had the Pinewood Derby every year, it got pretty competitive.  If we had space in between, it was a lot funner, and the parents didn't make it as competitive.

For the pre-opener of our Cub Scout Space Derby, we lined up the rockets and had papers by each of the rockets.  Everyone went down the table, and wrote something on each paper that said what name they thought the rocket should be named.

Please go to the Akela's Council Blog to open these files.  We have asked them to store our files we have since we lost access to our site where we used to store them.

See the lines for the Space Derby going across the room with the planets hanging from them?

Here is how the rockets attach to the Space Derby line.  We used the chalk board to keep track of the race results.

After each race, they measured to see how far the rockets went.  Sometimes they had "races" to see how close you could come to a certain planet, so they would have to decide how many times to wind the rubber band.

For the awards, we wrote some of the fun names the kids made up around the outside of the boys awards.  It turned out to be a fun night!

Do you have the plans on how to build a Space Derby Track? If so, do you mind sharing them? My email is 4-debbie@cox.net

  2. Debbie Bennett, you can order the track from Best Track! They are the makers of pinewood derby tracks as well, they have the full directions on what you need to build the track and/or assemble their track! We purchased one for our pack in December and are holding our first derby in April. My husband and I put it all together today and had fun with the kids trying it out.....We can't wait its been so much fun!
